The Temper Trap

This band have been in a bubble of hype for the last year, and it appears that bubble is set to burst. However a closer look at the stats will explain that’s not neccasarily a bad thing…

The name the Temper Trap will not resonate with most chart music lovers, however play them the song Sweet Disposition and the regonition will be instant. This is no wonder given that the track has been used on countless primetime TV shows. not to mention in adverts for Chrysler, Peugeot, and most recently Diet Coke.

Looking at the graph below you can clearly see The Temper Trap were one of the buzz bands of 2009, however the peak appears to tail off in 2010.

The buzz around the band may be subsiding but there have been peaks in other areas, as you can see from the graph below which shows MySpace views and plays.

We can see a peak in their plays while there view count remains largely the same, this suggests that the fans visiting the page are listening to more than one song. Perhaps the band are escaping from the shadow of only being known for “that” song…

This isn’t the only promising sign, the band are seeing a growth in their number of fans on facebook. This graph compares the number of fans being added per hour on MySpace, Facebook and Twitter. This is a significant step as Facebook is probably regarded as the “mainstream” of social networking and appeals to a much broader audience.

Again we see The Temper Trap’s broad appeal when we look at their MySpace age spread. We can see that The Temper Trap peak around the under 20′s age range but interestingly their age spread is wider than their label mates (Local Natives).

It may just be that 2010 is the year that The Temper Trap go from being a talked about internet “buzz” band, to mainstream rock demi-gods. Perhaps their performance at SXSW will tip the balance in their favour…
